What to expect from counselling and therapy

My training and education is based in researched counselling approaches and psychological therapies to help you with your desired changes, including: Person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, neuroscience, mindfulness-based approaches, cognitive-behavioural therapy, sensorimotor-based psychotherapy, 3-stage trauma recovery, stress coping theory, meditation skills and biofeedback, and contemporary couple and family therapies.

Ways counselling can help:

  • Strengthen confidence and sense of self
  • Develop more meaningful relationships
  • Relieve emotional stress
  • Build self-understanding
  • Work through past losses or traumas
  • Understand and change negative behaviours and habits
  • Clarify goals and increase motivation for change

The first session is for talking about the problems that bring you to therapy and what you hope to get from your counselling experience. You’ll be asked to read a “consent to treatment” form that outlines what counselling is, confidentiality, cancellation policy and payment of fees. In the initial session we also begin to clarify your concerns and discomforts, the contributing sources, and explore personalized ways of developing positive coping abilities to improve your day-to-day life and overall situation.

A main goal of counselling is to help you to understand your reactions and responses and to create positive changes. Together we explore your emotions, thoughts and responses to the problems you face. I carefully listen and offer non-judgmental, thoughtful, empathetic responses. I also use a variety of approaches to support you in your abilities to raise awareness and resourceful perspectives, understand contributing factors and root causes of problems, set meaningful goals, problem-solve difficulties and change old patterns. Counselling also helps you to build your confidence in sustaining change and transferring your strengths other areas of your life and future goals.

As a registered social worker my counselling practice is guided by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). The fees are based on my education and years of direct counselling experience, as well as by my professional membership. Fees are paid by Visa, Mastercard, Amex or cash at each therapy session and you will be provided receipts with my OCSWSSW social work registration number. Your extended health insurance provider may reimburse you some of the counselling fees paid to a registered social worker.
